No Escaping the Cloud at AWS Re:Invent

There was heavy cloud (computing) cover at Amazon Web Services’ annual user conference last week, but that didn’t stop the sun from shining on the roughly 19,000 eager techies in attendance. As one of those self-professed computing geeks, I left the event feeling both enlightened and empowered. AWS continues to get it, and is creating new services every day to make the impossible, possible, by truly empowering developers and IT to deliver on business needs.

A few things were especially intriguing for me:

  • AWS Mobile HubYou can now easily build apps enabled from the start to use AWS services and be powered by AWS. You first think through what your app is going to need to do. For example, if you need someone to log in, just click a button using the interface. Same thing with push notifications, analytics, content delivery and more. Your app is instantly configured to use the AWS services for the necessary features, and the services are ready to go. In the end, you output native projects for iOS and Android and can start developing your app.

AWS also thought through how a new user may react to understanding its services. As a result, when you're navigating in the "hub," there are complete explanations for what each service does, how much it costs, etc.

Another great part is that there's now a "hub" for all of the mobile-related services, so as AWS adds more, you can just go back to the same place to get your app started and ready to use them.

  • AWS IoT: AWS has rolled out a platform to allow you to manage and securely control internet-connected devices and cloud applications. The platform is in beta and will allow you to easily route messages from internet-connected devices to AWS endpoints. This will be a category killer because there's no cost to communicate with AWS services and, for the first year, messaging is very affordable on the platform.

  • AWS Import/Export Snowball: Then there’s Snowball, a petabyte-scale data transport solution that will let AWS users ship tons of data into or out of AWS via a 45-pound storage device. It’s clearly the silver bullet to take out the last stronghold of the self-run data center.

  • 2016 Premier Consulting Partners: Finally, I’d be remiss if I failed to mention my excitement over the partner announcements, which included Mobiquity as one of 46 global consulting partners upgraded to Premier status.

Indeed, AWS continues to take the cloud computing world by storm. As Jim Fowler, CIO of GE put it, “…this is no longer an experiment, this is no longer a test. …It’s inevitable.”
