Planes, Trains and Buses, Oh My!

Public transportation travels in time – to the future

Microsoft and Boeing have announced a partnership that will launch intelligent assistant Cortana 30,000 feet in the sky and centralize aviation data in the cloud. If the partnership takes off, it will help airlines operate more efficiently.

Meanwhile, underground, New York City has plans to invest $27 billion to upgrade its subway system with digital displays, better security, WiFi and USB charging ports by 2020.

On land, Mercedes-Benz has released what it considers to be the bus of the future. Fittingly named the Future Bus, this autonomous vehicle is currently taking test drives around the Netherlands. While it's equipped with GPS, radar and several cameras to recognize pedestrians and traffic signals, regulations still require a human operator to sit behind the wheel in case of emergency.

The Future

Public transportation will continue to ride with the times. We’ve all heard about how it will keep getting smarter due to new technologies and the Internet of Things. It’s also coming to meet our modern demands, like providing connectivity on the subway ride to work.

What About Us

Say hello to better business trips and morning commutes! Thanks to Cortana, your luggage could be on the carousel by the time you arrive at baggage claim. Or, your connected bus could identify potholes and avoid them on future routes. These benefits, among others, could be coming to a transportation system near you.
