Gene Editing Goes Mainstream

Bio-hacking takes center stage

China recently made headlines for its use of CRISPR, a gene editing tool scientists will leverage to alter the DNA of adult humans for the first time in history. Previously used only on animals and human embryos, researchers are set to utilize CRISPR to remove disease-causing DNA out of the cells of lung cancer patients who haven’t responded to traditional medical care.

But not to worry, advanced molecular biologists are no longer the only ones able to conduct this groundbreaking research. Gene editing is about to go mainstream. For the small sum of $140, virtually anyone can now buy a CRISPR kit and theoretically begin altering DNA. By selling CRISPR to the masses, ex-NASA scientist Josiah Zayner aims to democratize science in an effort to speed up global innovation.

The Future

Bio-hacking is quickly evolving from the simple – wearing a Fitbit to track activity – to the innovative – cutting diseases out of DNA and using virtual reality and exoskeletons to help the disabled regain movement – to the extreme – sporting gold leaf tattoos that function as interfaces for smartphones and other digital devices. As science and technology advance, we can expect what’s now innovative to become common as new solutions, both effective and otherwise, continue to push the envelope.
What About Us
Sure, CRISPR is yet another example of how biotechnology could make us healthier. But what’s especially notable is how accessible it is. Putting know-how aside, you, too, can now edit your genes and potentially save your life for the cost of a nice dinner. While this accessibility means some of the most powerful health treatments will soon be available to the masses, it places new responsibility on us to use them the right way.
