Talking Alexa: What Did I Miss?

Ty Rollin / May 31, 2017

“Alexa, what did I miss?”

Well, depending on how closely you follow the latest in voice, you might not have caught that Amazon’s virtual assistant will soon be providing unprompted notifications. Amazon recently announced that it will be giving Alexa the ability to alert users when information becomes available instead of waiting for them to ask for it.

Talking Alexa: Call My Doctor!

With more than 10,000 skills in the market, Amazon Alexa is taking on new use cases each and every day. The virtual assistant has come a long way from her days of providing basic information and trivia. She’s now enabling everything from smart home automations to banking transactions. And with the recent launch of the Echo Show, Amazon’s first Alexa device with a touchscreen, she’ll soon be expanding her capabilities to support more complex experiences with images, videos, and more.

Talking Alexa: Show And Tell

Let me go on record. I believe the Echo Show will be a game changer when it comes to voice.

Announced yesterday, the Echo Show is the latest model in Amazon’s Echo family of devices. It features a seven-inch touch screen and camera along with the speakers we’ve come to expect.

Talking Alexa: April Fool’s

Did you hear about Petlexa?

Introduced late last week, this new feature available on all Echo devices allows dogs, cats, and other pets to engage with Alexa just like us humans. Using Petlexa, our four-legged friends can activate smart toys, watch their favorite animal movies, start Spotify playlists, and even order food and treats from While my dog hasn’t tried it just yet, I have a feeling she’ll really like it. (Maybe the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree after all.)

Talking Alexa: Be Our Guest

Are you a fan of “Beauty and the Beast?”

Before you answer, I should probably tell you it doesn’t really matter. At least, that’s what Google thought when it decided to have its virtual assistant Google Home tell everyone about the movie. When users activated the My Day feature last Thursday, they got their usual updates on the weather and any scheduled calendar events.

Talking Alexa: The Big Game

What’s the difference between Amazon’s Alexa and the Atlanta Falcons? She has a ring.

No, this isn’t my inner Patriots fan typing. It’s the response Alexa will give you when you ask her to tell a Falcons burn. For the record, she’ll also provide Patriots burns as well as game statistics and Super Bowl trivia. And just in case you turned off last Sunday's game early, she would have been happy to provide you with live updates (so that you didn’t miss the Patriots impressive comeback, of course.)
