Alex and Ani mPOS Solution

The Client
Alex and Ani is a lifestyle brand with 28 retail locations across the U.S., over 1,000 domestic wholesale accounts, and international retail partners in Japan, Spain, Portugal, Ireland and the Caribbean. Part of the company’s mission to promote positive energy is to create products of unparalleled quality and beauty that promote consciousness and unity. Alex and Ani designer Carolyn Rafaelian, founder and creative director, designs pieces that are made entirely in the U.S. from recycled material, encouraging social consciousness.

Their Challenge
Checkout lines are not particularly conducive to positive thoughts and energy. The company wanted to give their Bangle Bartenders a way to directly interact with customers, while reducing lines. They anticipated that this would enhance the in-store customer experience, improve brand perception, provide better customer service and thereby increase sales revenues.

Our Solution
In conjunction with Alex and Ani, Mobiquity created a mobile point-of-sales solution that uses Daily Systems’ iAPS™ sled for iPod touch. Alex and Ani’s new mobile-payment option means sales associates can swipe credit cards, scan bar codes and print, allowing a customer to sign and receive a copy of the credit-card receipt at the time of purchase—all in the aisles and not at a cashier.

We accomplished this by:

  • Constructing a native iOS wrapper to host the Alex and Ani Web application that runs remotely from a company server
  • Using a third-party hardware solution and Daily Systems iAPS DS247i All-in-one Device (iAPS) for the credit-card swiping, scanning and printing functions
  • Seamlessly integrating with Alex and Ani’s VIOPSYS point of sale system
  • Deploying the application via Apperian EASE

Results
In addition to shorter lines and wait times for customers, the new mobile check out allowed customers to continue browsing, often resulting in additional products being added to their purchase. Alex and Ani CTO Joseph Lezon lauded the results saying, “Working with Mobiquity to develop our Mobile POS system gave us the opportunity to increase our points of checkout from four to 10 in most stores and in one location, from five to 25. This allowed us to hire more sales staff to interact with the customer in a more personal way and being able to assist them from the beginning to the end of their visit. The use of the Mobile POS devices gave the store environment a more intimate feel and improved the flow of customer traffic while almost eliminating lines. The combination of amazing collections and the new Mobile POS devices resulted in our comparable year-over-year sales increasing 318%.”
