Ways Retailers Can Combat Showrooming

November 29, 2012

With the holiday season in full swing, sellers are desperate to get more customers into their stores. While mobile devices can be a great sales venue, “showrooming”—when shoppers check out items in person then buy them elsewhere online—is a problem. There are steps sellers can take to lure customers into their establishments. One is to tie social media into the customer’s shopping experience. Another is offering a tag-scan app with peer opinions and reviews. Mobile coupons redeemable only on-site can be also be a great way to drive more traffic to stores. A mobile website is also a must. A site that provides information as well as reviews and coupons for products reaches customers who might ordinarily showroom and may lead to higher in-store traffic. Showrooming isn’t the death knell for stores, not if retailers act creatively. Looking for a good example? How about Alex and Ani, who recently launched it's mobile POS to help better their instore experience.
