Apple Acquires AuthenTec

August 01, 2012

When Apple announced last week that they planned to acquire AuthenTec for $356 million, speculation began as to how the proprietary technology could be used in Apple products. AuthenTec’s biometric security and authentication services provide a great opportunity for Apple. It could advance mobile payments in the United States by providing protections for users through pairing biometric measures with credit-card information. Fingerprint recognition could revolutionize how users operate their devices. Through such authentication, a user would press his or her finger on the screen to retrieve customized preferences or even access a music library on any device. This comes as Apple’s newest OS X Mountain Lion recorded the most downloads upon release in Apple’s history with more than three million in four days.
